The Kindy children have been reading Joy Cowley's picture book "Chicken Rice". It is a wonderful story with a rhyming, predictable text with a plot twist at the end and our children love it!
We chose this text as it allows the children to practise rhyming and tune into rhythm in language. It is also a repetitive text allowing children to consolidate their understanding of story structures, story sequences, be able to anticipate the words that come next as well as predicting what will happen first, next, and then and in the end - important foundation skills for reading and writing.
Next, we decided to make our own chicken rice to share with our friends, just like in the story. It was soooo easy to make in the rice cooker. Scroll to the end for our Kindy rice cooker recipe!
We did have to buy some ingredients however, all our garnishes are home grown from our Kindy veggie garden....tomatoes, cucumber, pandan, spring onions....
It looked (and tasted) delicious! Better than curry, better than fish, chicken rice was our favourite dish!
Our Kindy recipe for Rice Cooker Chicken Rice is here! Try it at home and send us your photos on Tapestry!
